CHAPTER EIGHT

Jo

As soon as I walked into the kitchen I saw Maddy standing there orchestrating the meal preparation. Even though the room was full of women, I couldn’t tear my eyes away from her. Then she managed to clear everyone out of the room and pulled me out back for the kisses we had both been hoping for.

When Andi came in to warm her coffee I was sure she’d seen us with our lips locked, even though Maddy said she’d never looked in our direction. We were less than ten feet from her, so even though her back was turned she must have known something was going on. But if it didn’t bother Maddy I decided not to let it bother me. I liked kissing Maddy, hell, I liked everything about Maddy. If it had been Elaine there in the kitchen, well, that would have been a different story.

I was impressed at how well organized Maddy was. Hosting a holiday dinner for group like that would be a challenge, at least for me. But she took charge and made certain everything went smoothly. Like a general marshalling her troops, she kept everyone moving and coordinated right up to the moment we sat down at the table. Somehow she managed to get away and change clothes. There were place cards set out to avoid any confusion about where we each would sit. I wished I could have been next to her, but that wasn’t my where my place card was.

Sitting next to Pam at the dinner table was - interesting. “Don’t you think Mrs. Elliott is wonderful? I sure do. She’s been so nice to me. It doesn’t bother her at all that Andi and I are girlfriends. She’s a great Mom. My Mom was so worried about people not liking me, me and Andi I mean. It’s okay with you, isn’t it? Oh yeah, I forgot, you’re gay too. Isn’t it cool all us lesbians are here together.” She didn’t need me to say anything. “I just love Flo’s little baby, he’s so sweet. Isn’t Mrs. Elliott cute, mashing up food and sticking it in his little mouth. I’d love to have a baby sometime, wouldn’t you?” She didn’t give me the opportunity to tell her the answer to that was no.

After we’d finished eating, Maddy took her grandson to get him cleaned up. I have not been around babies much and had no idea that a single human being could wear so much food on his face and hands. I helped Pam and Andi clear the table and carry everything to the kitchen. As we were rinsing the plates and putting them in the dishwasher, Andi said, “You and Mom seem like pretty good friends.”

“I’ve only known her a few weeks, but we’ve gotten to know each other.”

“I bet you have,” she said. Even though the girl wasn’t looking at me, I knew I had her full attention.

“She and Elaine have been friends for years, though,” I told her

“Yes, Elaine’s been around most of my life.
